The short answer is that this woman suffers from narcissistic Personality Disorder. Usually such people hide the worst traits of their mental disease since on at least some level they realize how repulsive their true thinking is to normal people. On another level they justify their thinking by viewing normal people with disdain for being weak and gullible while they at the same time manipulate those around them and put up a false front of a charming personality. But in a crisis, whether real or simply perceived as in this case they can lash out in bizarre outbursts that to most of us just seem insane. How she can be around this guy and hear him talking about his plans for days and still not catch on or even understand when he is telling her what he is about to do is because they are sooo completely wrapped up in themselves they never really are able to pay much attention to the lives of others. It really is ALL about them. Violate that and you will pay the price. Unless you learn to walk away like this smart guy did. And blaming him is a bit naive until you have been around a person with NPD. I know from painful personal experience. They can be extremely clever in putting forth a public persona that rarely is dropped unless they feel completely safe. Then when you do see their true self it is usually brief and infrequent and you are able to rationalize that they are just having a bad moment and never realize that this is the real person you rarely see. The rest is all play acting. |
