Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and SS Suppression Photos, April 19-May 16, 1943
Jewish resistance fighters in the Warsaw ghetto launched an uprising against the final German deportation operation on April 19, 1943. About 700 fighters from the Jewish Combat Organization and Jewish Military Union faced roughly 2,000 German SS and police personnel equipped with artillery. Forces commanded by Jürgen Stroop crushed the revolt after nearly a month of fighting and destroyed much of the ghetto. The Great Synagogue was blown up on May 16, marking the end of the operation. At least 7,000 Jews died while fighting or hiding. German forces captured about 7,000 others and sent them to the Treblinka killing center. Approximately 42,000 were deported to Majdanek and associated forced-labor camps, and most were murdered during Operation Harvest Festival in November 1943. The photographs show German gun crews shelling buildings, blocks burning, resistance fighters surrendering, SS interrogations, bunkers, captured residents and bodies in the ruins. Several clandestine long-distance photographs also document deportations during the uprising. |
