Kovno Ghetto Photos: Kaunas, Lithuania, 1941-1944
The Kovno ghetto operated in the Slobodka district of Kaunas, Lithuania, from August 15, 1941, until July 1944. About 30,000 Jews were confined there. During the Great Action on October 28 and 29, 1941, more than 9,200 people, including about 4,300 children, were taken to the Ninth Fort and shot. The SS assumed control in September 1943 and converted the ghetto into the Kauen concentration camp. The following month, more than 2,700 prisoners were deported, about 2,000 to camps in Estonia and about 700 to Auschwitz. Another roundup targeted children on March 27 and 28, 1944. The remaining prisoners were evacuated to Stutthof and Dachau in July 1944, and the ghetto was razed before Soviet forces arrived on August 1. Clandestine photographs, many made by George Kadish, document gardens, forced labor, a secret school, an orchestra, the fire brigade, families moving after the ghetto was reduced in size, deportation assembly points, abandoned belongings and the hanging of Nahum Meck. |
