Upshot-Knothole Grable: 280mm Atomic Cannon Test in Nevada, May 25, 1953
Shot Grable of Operation Upshot-Knothole was conducted at Frenchman Flat in Area 5 of the Nevada Test Site at 8:30 a.m. PDT on May 25, 1953. The Army fired a 280 mm W9 gun-type nuclear shell from the M65 cannon known as "Atomic Annie." The shell burst about 524 feet above the ground roughly 19 seconds later and produced a yield of about 15 kilotons. It was the first and only nuclear artillery shell fired from a cannon. The test was paired with the Desert Rock V troop exercise. Color footage shows the M65 and its crew, officers at the breech, the cannon firing, vehicles and troops engulfed by dust, and the rising mushroom cloud. Black-and-white footage shows Desert Rock troops watching a cloud from trenches and later advancing. |
