Photos of the Eiffel Tower Under Construction in Paris, 1887-1889
Construction of Gustave Eiffel's iron tower began at the Champ de Mars in Paris in 1887 for the 1889 Exposition Universelle. Assembly of the iron superstructure began on July 1, 1887, and the tower was completed on March 31, 1889. Its framework used 18,038 metal parts, about 2.5 million rivets and 7,300 metric tons of iron. The photographs follow the work in stages, showing the first iron sections and derricks, the four legs rising around scaffolding, the joining of the first-floor girders, completion of the first platform and the tower nearing its finished height. Several views include the Trocadero palace in the background. Additional footage filmed in 1898 shows a panorama through the girders during an elevator ascent.
