Lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith in Marion, Indiana, August 7, 1930
Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith were lynched by a mob in the courthouse square in Marion, Indiana, on August 7, 1930. The mob broke into the Grant County jail with sledgehammers, beat the two young Black men and hanged them from a tree. They had been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Claude Deeter and an alleged assault on his companion, Mary Ball. The accusation was never tried. A third suspect, 16-year-old James Cameron, was also taken from the jail but was spared after someone in the crowd said he was innocent. Cameron was later convicted as an accessory and served four years. Lawrence Beitler photographed the hanging and the assembled crowd, which included men, women and children. His flash photograph shows Shipp and Smith hanging above the crowd as a man points toward their bodies. Eight people were eventually charged, but two were acquitted and the remaining cases were dropped. Nobody was convicted. The photograph later inspired Abel Meeropol's poem "Bitter Fruit," which became the song "Strange Fruit." Also covered here: Photographic Time Line

it's also interesting that in africa and the middle east they do this to their own race, plenty of videos and pictures to show this on this site. and we're not talking about videos or pix from 80 years ago, but pictures and videos from now adays.

They don't teach the proper usage of periods or commas at USC apparently.
