Klomino, Poland: Abandoned Soviet Garrison Town
Kłomino, Poland, is a former Soviet Army garrison town that was abandoned after Soviet troops withdrew in the early 1990s. Known to the Soviets as Gródek, it had previously served as the German Wehrmacht garrison and training area Westfalenhof. Poles were barred from the Soviet base, which once housed thousands of soldiers and residents. After the withdrawal, the site was transferred to Poland, guarded by the Polish Army for about a year and then placed under civilian administration. It was never substantially resettled, and many of its buildings were looted. The population had fallen to 12 by 2012. Views of the former base show derelict apartment blocks, overgrown roads, damaged houses, empty interiors, a burned building and a rusting tank. Surviving Soviet decorations include a mural depicting soldiers and the Soviet emblem, and a Russian inscription meaning "No one is forgotten, nothing is forgotten."
