Estedt Death March Killings: Exhumation and Funeral, May 11, 1945
German authorities shot a group of escaped death march prisoners near Estedt on April 13, 1945. The Polish, Soviet and Jewish prisoners had escaped from a column moving from Mieste toward Gardelegen and hidden in the Zichtau forest. After farmers alerted police, the prisoners were recaptured, taken to a site near Estedt, forced to dig large graves and killed. U.S. forces liberated the area the following day. On May 11, the U.S. Military Government required civilians from Estedt to exhume the bodies and prepare them for proper burial. The photographs show civilians lifting bodies from sandy graves, wrapping them in sheets and transporting them on horse-drawn wagons. Other frames show U.S. officers questioning local civilians and residents attending a funeral conducted by a Catholic priest. Former Polish forced laborers laid a wreath during the service. |
