Campbell Brothers Circus Train Wreck in Babcock, Wisconsin, August 11, 1910
A passenger train struck the rear of the Campbell Brothers circus train at the Babcock rail junction in Wood County, Wisconsin, on August 11, 1910. The circus was traveling to Grand Rapids, now Wisconsin Rapids. Several circus cars were smashed, and a circus employee was reported killed, although accounts differ on the overall human toll. Elephants and other circus animals died in the wreck, while other animals escaped and were hunted afterward. Dead animals were buried near the junction. One photograph shows a steam locomotive and overturned rail cars along an embankment, with spilled coal and a crowd of onlookers. Another shows men posed behind a dead elephant beside a smashed wooden stock car, with what appears to be a second carcass nearby. Also covered here: Photographic Time Line |
