USS Arizona Burning at Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941
USS Arizona was sunk and burned at Battleship Row during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The attack killed 1,177 service members aboard the battleship, part of the overall death toll of 2,341. An official U.S. Navy photograph shows the ship's forward superstructure and Number Two 14-inch triple gun turret amid dense black smoke. The tripod foremast and fire-control top lean sharply after the forward magazines exploded and the hull structure beneath the foremast's front leg collapsed. Burning wreckage is visible at the waterline, with a small boat near the ship.
