Bergen-Belsen Liberation, April 15, 1945, and Postwar Displaced Persons Camp
The British 11th Armoured Division took over Bergen-Belsen near Celle, Lower Saxony, on April 15, 1945, under a local surrender agreement. About 55,000 prisoners were inside, and thousands of bodies remained unburied. Former SS guards were made to load corpses for burial, and a British bulldozer pushed bodies into a mass grave. British forces later burned the camp buildings to help control typhus. A displaced persons camp followed at Bergen-Belsen. During the postwar years, its residents held weddings, played football, formed kibbutz groups and organized Zionist demonstrations and an Exodus protest. Memorial gatherings were also held at the former concentration camp. |

Wow!! It's a bit of a shame about Bergen Belsen really - there's not a great deal to see there... The museum's really interesting but it's not the same as going to Auschwitz, etc, and getting to have a nosey in the barracks. The liberation footage of Bergen Belsen is good though... Fab post again!
