Mauthausen-Gusen Liberation and Mass Graves, Upper Austria, May 1945
U.S. troops liberated the Gusen concentration camp complex in Upper Austria on May 5, 1945. Built near Langenstein and St. Georgen an der Gusen as part of the Mauthausen camp system, Gusen held prisoners used as slave labor in stone quarries and armaments production. The first prisoners arrived in 1940. The Mauthausen Memorial says at least 71,000 people were deported to Gusen and more than half died there. More than 20,000 prisoners were freed by U.S. forces. Period photographs show Gusen I under construction around 1940 and the camp after liberation in May 1945. They document survivors, bodies outside the barracks and on carts, crematorium furnaces, and Austrian civilians digging and filling mass graves. Other scenes show a chaplain praying at an open grave, camp guards being made to crawl or exercise, and former prisoners demonstrating a punishment used by the SS. Additional photographs record American investigations and postwar proceedings involving a former prisoner who served as a camp doctor and men accused of murdering or mistreating prisoners. |

I thought they were yours at first (although I couldn't figure out why you'd be posting pictures of iced tea!) as I first saw them in one of your posts!! But someone just left a message on one of my medical threads asking me what was with the pictures of iced tea!! So they seem to be randomly turning up!! Very strange!!! |
