Toronto Officer Acquitted of Perjury
Daniel Costa, then a Toronto police officer, was acquitted of perjury after it was revealed that he lied during a police interview about the whereabouts of his brother, Michael Costa. Michael Costa, an accused drug dealer, was a person of interest when Alexander Kucovic was shot and killed execution style. Kucovic, formerly known as Kosto Barjaktarovic, had mob ties and had been in the witness protection program for being a "snitch," but was no longer in the program when he was killed. Earlier on the day of the interview, Daniel Costa drove his brother to the airport, where Michael Costa departed for Italy. A review of Daniel Costa's computer activity also showed that he had searched police records without authorization for information about his brother. Daniel Costa was later charged with perjury. The defense argued that he could not be found guilty of perjury because he was not required by law to speak to police, and he was acquitted. In April 2015, Michael Costa was charged with one count of conspiracy to import and trafficking cocaine. As of September 2016, no arrests had been made in Alex Kucovic's murder. The video is a police interview-room recording that runs about 51 minutes and shows the interview itself, without narration or a presenter. The screen goes black for the final 10 minutes, apparently because of poor A/V equipment in the interrogation room.
