Tasha Bentley Questioned in Husband's Shooting
Tasha Bentley pleaded guilty to murder in July 2021 for fatally shooting her husband, Gary Wayne Bentley, as he slept at their home in Campbellsburg, Kentucky, on December 10, 2017, and the reported sentence is 55 years. Gary Bentley, 33, lived with Tasha and their four-year-old son, who is not named in reporting, on Troutman Hill Road in Henry County. Gary's parents lived nearby, and his father, Gerald Bentley, was reported as the person who found his body. Tasha Bentley's age at the time and her occupation were not stated. Kentucky State Police said the couple had a physical altercation at about 8:30 p.m. after Gary allegedly assaulted their son. Hours later, Tasha shot Gary once in the back of the head with her own Ruger handgun. Police said roughly 20 firearms were removed from the couple's gun safe to make the house appear to have been burglarized. Marijuana was also recovered at the residence. An autopsy confirmed that Gary died of a single gunshot wound to the back of the head. Detectives from Kentucky State Police Post 5 handled the investigation. Tasha told police that she shot Gary after he assaulted their son and kicked her. She also raised a claim of abuse that investigators said at the time was not supported by anything they had. The staged gun safe undercut the burglary scenario. Detectives later identified a life insurance policy on Gary's life, described as one million dollars, that had been put in place days before the shooting and authorized using Gary's electronic signature. They also identified a relationship between Tasha and a co-worker, along with her plans to move out in mid-January 2018. During her December 11, 2017 interview, she initially denied knowing how Gary was shot before acknowledging the relationship and admitting that she fired the shot. She was arrested after the autopsy and lodged in the Carroll County Detention Center on a murder charge. Tasha was charged with murder in Henry County. She pleaded guilty in July 2021, with sentencing set for September 17, 2021. She is held at the Kentucky Correctional Institute for Women, with reported parole eligibility in 2037 and a sentence expiring in 2072. There is no reported appeal of the conviction. On October 18, 2024, the Kentucky Court of Appeals affirmed a family court ruling that left custody and the visitation schedule for the couple's son as they stood. The court rejected a bid by the boy's paternal grandparents for modified custody and increased visitation. The opinion states that Tasha shot and killed Gary on December 10, 2017 and pleaded guilty to murder. The video is a police interview-room recording that runs about 46 minutes. It contains the interview itself and opens with a short narrated introduction naming the people involved.
