Stormy Delehanty Questioned in Her Husband's Death

Stormy Delehanty was convicted of murder and three other counts on March 25, 2021, in the stabbing death of Roman B. Roshchupkin in Deerfield Township, Warren County, Ohio, and initially sentenced to 18 years to life.

Delehanty contacted a Sheriff's Office detective from the Warren County Jail and asked to talk. During the August 8, 2020, interview, she said "I'm the one who did it" and "It's just me," but said she remembered nothing because she was extraordinarily intoxicated. She said she and Roshchupkin were on the bed listening to music when he threw her to the floor and "had my wrists back." The next thing she recalled was him in a puddle of blood. She said she cleaned on "auto-pilot," dragged him down the hallway on a blanket, then decided to leave. The roughly two-hour recording was played at trial.

Delehanty, 28, lived with Roshchupkin, 34, and her teenage brother in an apartment on Dartmouth Way. She had adopted her brother after their parents died. The Warren County Sheriff's Office and Prosecutor's Office described Roshchupkin as her husband, and she testified that they married in August 2019. Her brother described him as her boyfriend and said he did not know whether they were married. A neighbor's doorbell camera showed the couple arriving home in his white Mazda at 4:34 p.m. on July 4, 2020. Roshchupkin left, then returned at 4:53 p.m., the last time he was seen alive. The Prosecutor's Office placed the stabbing between July 4 and 5.

Store cameras showed Delehanty buying cleaning supplies, a pruning saw, hedge shears and a duffel bag on July 5. On July 6, she left carrying a black trash bag, $7,000 was transferred from the couple's joint account to her own, and she checked into a hotel in Covington, Kentucky. That evening, her brother entered the locked master bedroom while looking for laundry quarters and found Roshchupkin's body under blankets. He called 911, saying he had not seen the couple in about two days. Deputies found the body wrapped in sheets and blankets, with a pillowcase knotted tightly around the midsection, blood in the living room and knives missing from the kitchen block. The autopsy found five stab wounds to the neck, back, chest and left arm, and 33 superficial wounds, several with a serrated pattern. The neck wound pierced the jugular vein; the back wound pierced a lung. The cause of death was multiple sharp force injuries. Prosecutors told the jury he was stabbed 38 times.

Deputies filed a murder warrant on July 7, 2020. Las Vegas police arrested Delehanty at Boulder Station Casino on July 11. She had cuts on her left arm and a duffel bag containing handwritten notes. One read, "On July 4th, I killed my husband accidentally." Another asked that the Russian Embassy be notified so Roshchupkin's parents could be told. In the Mazda, a pillowcase held two KitchenAid knives, one serrated, and a towel that appeared bloodstained.

Delehanty was indicted on murder as the proximate result of felonious assault, two counts of felonious assault, and tampering with evidence. At the three-day trial in Warren County Common Pleas Court before Judge Timothy Tepe, she testified that Roshchupkin pushed her off the bed twice, that she hit her head and blacked out, and that he had attacked her before. The jury found her guilty on all four counts. Judge Tepe sentenced her to 15 years to life for murder and a consecutive three years for tampering with evidence. She entered state prison on April 21, 2021.

On February 6, 2023, the Twelfth District Court of Appeals (State v. Delehanty, 2023-Ohio-337) affirmed the convictions, rejecting challenges to crime scene and autopsy photographs and to the refusal of a self-defense instruction. It vacated the sentence and remanded for the required Violent Offender Database advisements and resentencing. No resentencing outcome has been publicly reported. Ohio prison records list her at the Ohio Reformatory for Women with a parole eligibility date of July 28, 2038.
