Kandise L. Sheahen Questioned in Grandmother's Death
A jury found Kandise L. Sheahen guilty on May 30, 2025, of negligently subjecting an individual at risk to abuse, causing death, in the death of her grandmother in Wausau, Wisconsin. The three-day trial began on May 28, 2025, in Marathon County Circuit Court before Judge Suzanne O'Neill. Jurors deliberated for about two hours. On August 27, 2025, Judge O'Neill withheld sentence and placed Sheahen on six years of probation, with nine months in the Marathon County Jail as a condition and Huber privileges for work, school and childcare. She was ordered to report by September 10, 2025. Other conditions included counseling, court costs, a DNA sample, no use of social media to promote any product, and no responsibility for a vulnerable person's medical care without direct supervision. The assistant district attorney said he had argued for six years in prison. Under a withheld sentence, no further sentence follows if she completes probation; revocation allows the court to impose any sentence allowed by law. No appeal or probation revocation has been reported. Sheahen was 36 when she was charged on June 16, 2022, about five months after the death. The single count was a Class D felony with an enhancer because the victim was elderly. It carried up to 25 years in prison and a $100,000 fine, plus up to five more years under the enhancer. A registered nurse in Wausau, Sheahen was health care power of attorney for her grandmother, a diabetic woman who lived on Garfield Street. The grandmother died at home on January 8, 2022. The autopsy gave the cause as diabetic ketoacidosis, which can occur when the body runs out of insulin; she also had COVID-19 and hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. A catheter and IV were in place, and the medical examiner found no evidence of an order for them. According to court documents, Sheahen sold and advertised a supplement called Q Core on Facebook. Prosecutors said she withheld insulin and other prescribed medications in favor of non-FDA-approved supplements she sold online. Ambulance crews made several lift-assist calls in the weeks before the death after the grandmother fell out of bed. On January 4, 2022, crews advised taking her to the emergency room for hyperglycemia. Investigators said Sheahen wanted only lift assistance, gave insulin, said vital signs "will not be taken tonight" and refused transport. A journal recorded blood sugar levels repeatedly between 300 and 500 in the days and weeks before the death; normal is 140 or below. Family members told police Sheahen posted repeatedly about the supplements in early December 2021, including: "12 days on Q Core and my 82 yr old Grandma is down on her insulin and off her Tylenol." In a voice recording obtained by police and later reviewed by jurors, she said her goal was "to be the hands and feet of Jesus." Family members contacted police and said the grandmother had expressed fear for her safety at home. Before any charge, Sheahen gave a voluntary interview after being told she was not under arrest and was free to leave. According to court documents, she told officers she did not put her grandmother on Q Core and take her off insulin, calling the Facebook post "an advertising thing." She said that as power of attorney she felt her grandmother should make her own decisions and she would not force her to take medication. The grandmother's meter showed a typical range of 200 to 300; Sheahen said that was not "very high" and was where her grandmother did best. Court documents said that as a registered nurse she would have been aware of the hyperglycemia the meter recorded. Near the interview's end, a detective told her the case would either be closed without charges or referred to the district attorney, who makes charging decisions.
