Spencer Sanders Questioned in Blanka Sanders Killing

A Sarasota County jury convicted Spencer D. Sanders II of first-degree premeditated murder and attempted sexual assault with use of force likely to cause serious personal injury in the killing of his wife, Blanka Sanders, in Sarasota, Florida.

Blanka Sanders was stabbed 17 times in the chest and throat on July 10, 2018, inside the couple's home in the 900 block of 42nd Street. Her body was found the following evening after her daughter, who is not named in the reporting and was in regular contact with her, could not reach her and went to the house. Police responding to a report of an injured person found Blanka Sanders lying face down on the kitchen floor in a pool of blood.

Sarasota Police Department detectives treated the death as a homicide and focused on Spencer Sanders, who was 39 at the time of his wife's death. During an interview lasting about an hour and a half, a detective told him he was under arrest for his wife's murder. Contemporary news reports do not summarize what Sanders told detectives during that interview.

Sanders was arrested and charged with her killing, and the Sarasota Police Department announced the arrest on the morning of Thursday, July 12, 2018. Prosecutors later told jurors that Sanders had left shoe prints in his wife's blood and that his semen was found on the back of her thigh. They used video evidence to build a timeline of his movements before the killing. The state's case rested on the physical evidence and timeline rather than on any admission.

About two months before the killing, in May 2018, Sanders had been arrested on a charge of domestic battery by strangulation. News reports of the later homicide do not say how that case was resolved.

On Friday, September 13, 2019, the jury convicted Sanders on both counts. He was sentenced the same day to life in prison on the murder count and a concurrent 15-year term on the attempted sexual assault count. No appellate decision or later development has been publicly reported.

The video is a police interview-room recording that runs about 86 minutes and presents the interview itself. It opens with a short narrated introduction naming the people involved.
