Kaitlyn Coones Questioned in Nicole Jones Killing
Kaitlyn Coones, then 18, and Jonathon Jones were each sentenced in Lucas County, Ohio, to life in prison with parole eligibility after 25 years after pleading no contest on June 4, 2024, to aggravated murder and abuse of a corpse in the death of Nicole Denise Jones. Nicole Jones was 53 and lived in Sylvania Township with her 33-year-old son, Jonathon Jones. In March 2023, he pleaded guilty to charges reported as attempted pandering of obscene material involving a minor and child endangerment, arising from his relationship with Coones, which reporting says began when she was 15. He was on a GPS ankle monitor and due to be sentenced on May 4, 2023. Coones was 17, a foster child in the custody of Stark County Children Services, and lived in a group home in the Canton area. Reported missing from the placement in April 2023, she went to the Jones home and stayed there without Nicole Jones's knowledge. Coones told investigators she entered through a window on April 19, 2023. Sylvania Township Detective Jake Albright testified on November 17, 2023, that Coones told Jonathon Jones on April 19 that they needed to do something about his mother because she was preventing them from being together. She gave him five hours to act, then extended the deadline. When he did not act, Coones strangled Nicole Jones and struck her in the head with a rock while she was looking in the refrigerator. Jonathon Jones was in the living room. The two bought a tarp and trash bags, wrapped the body, cleaned the scene and put the body in the trunk of Nicole Jones's vehicle. They went out to eat with the body still in the car, then placed it in a dumpster at a nearby apartment complex. The contents went to a landfill, and her body has never been recovered. After Canton police requested a welfare check, Nicole Jones was reported missing on May 5, 2023, more than two weeks after she was killed. Police said on May 12 that they believed she was dead. Coones and Jonathon Jones had fled to Mexico, where the U.S. Marshals Service Missing Child Unit located them in Ahumada, Chihuahua, on May 8. The GPS ankle monitor Jonathon Jones had not removed was central to tracking them. Coones was returned to Ohio on May 13 and booked into the Multi-County Juvenile Attention Center in Canton Township. Jonathon Jones remained in Mexican custody on May 16. While on the run, Coones called a case worker and said she had done something terrible. She was also reported to have texted a group home nurse that she had killed two people. After being turned over to American authorities, she was interviewed by FBI agents and gave detailed statements admitting she killed Nicole Jones. Prosecutors said both defendants described wrapping the body and putting it in the trunk during recorded interviews. Surveillance video and ankle monitor GPS data corroborated Coones's account of the purchases and the dumpster. In this recording, statements Coones had already made are read back to her, and she says she does not remember. The recording's date and location were not given, the specific interview was not identified, and it was not established that a prosecutor conducted it. Coones was initially charged in Lucas County Juvenile Court with aggravated murder and tampering with evidence before being certified to stand trial as an adult. A Lucas County grand jury indicted her in January 2024 on five counts: aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence. She pleaded not guilty, and bond was set at $1.75 million on February 28, 2024. Judge Gary Cook imposed the June 4 sentences. Lucas County assistant prosecutors Jennifer Liptack-Wilson and Patty Wardrop handled the case. No appeal has been reported. The video contains about 84 minutes of police interview-room footage. It presents the interview itself and begins with a short narrated introduction naming the people involved.
