Shakel McClain Questioned in Sam's Club Attack
Shakel McClain, who was 17 when a 73-year-old Sam's Club employee was attacked and her SUV taken in Tallahassee, Florida, was convicted of attempted felony murder and two other offenses and sentenced to life in prison. The employee was attacked after work on November 4, 2021, in the parking lot of the Sam's Club on Dick Wilson Boulevard. Her name was not given. She was found outside bleeding from severe head injuries, and doctors told officers she had brain bleeding and a skull fractured in several places, consistent with repeated blows or stomping. She underwent emergency surgery at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare. Police said she was beaten with a broken tree branch. Several days later, officers spotted the stolen SUV near South Monroe Street and Orange Avenue and began a pursuit. Two passengers identified McClain and told police he had picked them up and taken them to the North Florida Fair. He was found at a residence off South Monroe Street. Charges of attempted second-degree murder, armed carjacking and fleeing an officer were filed on November 29, 2021. McClain was moved from the Juvenile Assessment Center to the Leon County Detention Facility on December 1, 2021, and held without bond at his first court appearance on December 2, 2021. He was prosecuted as an adult. Public reporting did not describe his family background, and claims that he had no family or permanent address were not confirmed. McClain was interviewed at the Tallahassee Police Department after being read his rights. He denied being at the Sam's Club or hurting anyone and said he had visited a friend in town. Claims about what was said later in the interview were not verified. In February 2024, police arrested Aaron Carter, 20, who worked with the victim at Sam's Club, on charges of attempted murder and carjacking. Police alleged that Carter planned the attack with McClain and directed him to the location, citing text messages found while McClain's case was being prepared for trial. Carter was awaiting trial in April 2024. No verdict or sentence in his case has been publicly reported. On February 16, 2024, a Leon County jury deliberated about two hours before finding McClain guilty of attempted felony murder, armed carjacking with a deadly weapon and fleeing or attempting to elude an officer. Assistant State Attorney Rachel Jankowski prosecuted the case. McClain was sentenced on April 4, 2024, to life in prison, with eligibility for a sentence review after 25 years. No appellate outcome has been publicly confirmed. The video runs about 154 minutes and consists of police interview-room footage. It presents the interview itself, beginning with a brief narrated introduction naming the people involved.
