Gail M. Eastwood Ritchey Questioned in Geauga's Child Case
Gail M. Eastwood Ritchey was convicted of murder on April 4, 2022, and sentenced in Geauga County, Ohio, to an indefinite term of 15 years to life for the death of a newborn boy whose body was found in 1993. Ritchey was arrested in June 2019 and charged with murder. Her defense argued that the baby was stillborn and that the case belonged in Cuyahoga County, where the birth took place. Judge David Ondrey ruled that Geauga County was the proper venue because the body was found there. A jury returned the guilty verdict after a six-day trial, and Ondrey imposed the sentence on May 25, 2022. The 11th District Court of Appeals unanimously upheld the conviction on May 15, 2023, rejecting challenges involving venue, expert testimony on live birth and the exclusion of dissociative disorder evidence. The Ohio Supreme Court declined to accept the appeal on September 8, 2023. Newspaper carriers found the baby's body in March 1993 on Sidley Road in Thompson Township, Geauga County. He had been placed in a garbage bag and left in woods near the road. The coroner concluded that he had been born alive and had drawn breaths. Residents raised money for a funeral and headstone, and the unidentified child became known as Geauga's Child. The case remained unsolved for 26 years. Ritchey was 49 when she was questioned in 2019. She was married and had three adult children. In 1993, she worked as a nanny for a family in Shaker Heights, Cuyahoga County. She later married the baby's biological father. Investigators submitted the baby's DNA to a genealogy database as part of an investigative genetic genealogy effort. A match to a third or fourth cousin, whose DNA kit had been submitted by a relative in Nebraska, led investigators through her family to Ritchey. Detectives interviewed Ritchey in June 2019, though some reports say July 2019. They told her she was not under arrest and was free to leave, and they read her rights. Ritchey said she had been dating her future husband, contraception had failed and she gave birth alone in a toilet at her workplace. She said she did not look at the baby or know its sex and did not remember it making noise. She later told detectives she had also disposed of another newborn in a field in Cuyahoga County in 1990 or 1991. That baby has not been found, no charge was brought over it, and the jury did not hear the statement. The video is a police interview-room recording running about 117 minutes. It presents the interview itself, preceded by a short narrated introduction naming the people involved.
