Seth South Questioned in His Half-brothers' Deaths
Seth South, of Poulsbo in Kitsap County, Washington, is charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of his half-brothers, Scotty Bass, 17, and Sebastian Bass, 16, who were found dead at their family home on October 9, 2024. South was 23 in October 2024. One of the brothers was a student at North Kitsap High School. No motive has been reported. South has not been convicted of any offense. At his October 10, 2024, appearance in Kitsap County Superior Court, Judge William Houser ordered him held without bail and requested a competency evaluation at Western State Hospital. South made a sudden move toward the courtroom gallery and was restrained by officers. Both murder counts reportedly carry domestic violence enhancements. He was also booked on suspicion of third-degree assault of an officer. Some reports said he faced that charge, but other reporting said prosecutors amended the charges and did not charge him with assault. On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at about 3 p.m., South called 911 from the family home at 16460 Scandia Road NW, near Poulsbo. According to court papers as reported, he told the dispatcher that one of his brothers had injured himself; accounts differ on whether he said the brother had stabbed himself or cut his own throat. The line went silent, and the dispatcher heard what sounded like fighting. A deputy saw a body on the kitchen floor through a window. Scotty Bass was found face down in the kitchen with a kitchen knife nearby. Sebastian Bass was found at the top of the stairs on the second floor. Both were dead, and South was gone. Four knives and a pistol were collected as evidence. Deputies asked other agencies to look for South's black Toyota Tacoma. That evening, Pierce County deputies used spike strips to stop the truck on State Route 410 near Bonney Lake. South was arrested at about 8:30 p.m. Court papers as reported describe blood on the shift knob and the driver's seat, along with bloody clothing in the truck. South's maternal grandfather told detectives that South said he had killed "the boys" and said words to the effect of "you're with me or you're against me," according to the court papers. His mother's husband said South told him he had killed two people without saying who. His mother said South told her he had not hurt the boys. The papers also say South told a friend he was headed to Missouri to kill another sibling. Detectives interviewed South at a Pierce County Sheriff's Department building from about 10:36 p.m. on October 9 to just before 1 a.m. on October 10, 2024. According to the charging papers as reported, he told investigators he stabbed Scotty and that Scotty had killed Sebastian. He gave long, wandering answers about good and evil and about two sides. Near the end, asked about weapons, he said a gun was still in the house and was not used that day, and said he would like to talk to a lawyer. According to reports, when a Kitsap County detective tried to handcuff him to take him to jail, South lunged forward into the detective, who suffered minor injuries. A struggle with officers followed. No competency finding, plea, trial date, verdict or sentence has been reported. As of November 1, 2026, South remains in the Kitsap County Jail without bail awaiting trial; his next court date is December 1, 2026. The case is Kitsap County Superior Court case 24-1-00790-18.
