Julie Boxley Questioned in Glenn Andrews Fire Death

Julie Boxley's trial on felony murder and first-degree arson charges in the death of Glenn Andrews, 72, of Ishpeming, Michigan, ended in a mistrial on August 13, 2026, when the jury deadlocked. A jury was selected on August 3, 2026, and trial opened the next day before 25th Circuit Court Judge Andrew Griffin. Chief Prosecuting Attorney Jenna Nelson argued that Boxley's accounts were inconsistent and did not fit the evidence, pointing to other fires the prosecution alleges Boxley set. Chief Public Defender Patrick Crowley argued that an undetermined cause of fire is reasonable doubt. Jurors deliberated for more than 17 hours over three days. Reports of the final split differ: 7 to 5 for guilty in most, 6 to 6 in one.

Boxley has not been convicted in the Andrews case. She was charged in Marquette County on November 6, 2023, with first-degree (felony) murder, which carries life without parole, and first-degree arson. After a preliminary examination in March 2024, the case was bound over to circuit court. She pleaded not guilty at her April 2024 arraignment, and bond was set at $20 million. A trial set for late October 2025 was stayed when the defense appealed a ruling admitting prosecution evidence. On September 10, 2026, Griffin lowered bond to $200,000 total, $100,000 on each count, with house arrest, a GPS tether and daily alcohol testing if she is released. Nelson said she fully intends to retry the case.

Andrews was known in town through Glenn's Smokehouse, which reports say he owned or managed. Boxley was 52 when charged and 54 at her 2026 trial. Andrews' son testified that she gave home care to Andrews' wife after a stroke and later moved into the house; the wife was eventually moved to a nursing home. By March 2023, Boxley was living with Andrews at 175 Silver Street. Reports describe them as roommates.

A fire broke out at the house on March 5, 2023. Both got out and were taken to UP Health System-Marquette. Andrews had burns on the upper part of his body and died on March 19, 2023, at the University of Michigan Health Trauma Burn Center. Boxley had no injuries. Her account is that she jumped from a second-floor bedroom window onto the cellar roof and then onto the back deck, while Andrews went downstairs and out of the house. It was the third reported fire on Silver Street since August 2022.

A fire investigator interviewed Boxley on March 8, 2023, and that interview was taped. On March 14, 2023, while Andrews remained hospitalized, a State Police detective interviewed her voluntarily at the Michigan State Police Negaunee post. That interview was also recorded. According to trial coverage, the detective told her that her account differed from what she had told the fire investigator. He said a neighbor's video of the back of the burning house showed snow on the cellar roof that looked untouched, and Andrews had told investigators he jumped over the gate she said she had opened. The detective told Boxley he believed the fire was arson and she had set it. She denied setting the fire, then stopped answering questions and left.

Investigators testified at trial that the official cause of the fire was undetermined. Andrews' manner of death was also ruled undetermined. At a February 2025 hearing, a State Police fire inspector's testimony was cited that the fire was of human origin with unknown intent.

Separately, Boxley was charged in Alger County with assault with intent to murder and a lesser assault count, accused of setting her then-husband on fire at their apartment on Christmas Day 2021. She pleaded not guilty in September 2023; no outcome has been reported.

As of November 1, 2026, Boxley awaits retrial in the Andrews case; no retrial date has been reported, and the latest report, from September 11, 2026, does not say whether she has been released on the reduced bond.
