Sayantan Ghose Convicted of League City Murder

A Galveston County jury convicted Sayantan Ghose of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the June 28, 2017, shooting that killed Clarence Wayne Harris II and wounded Amanda Harris at their League City, Texas, home, and Ghose received concurrent sentences of 50 years and 20 years.

Ghose and Amanda Harris were married and divorced in December 2008. Amanda later married Clarence Wayne Harris II, known as Wayne, and they lived in the 700 block of Mayhill Ridge Lane in the Westover Park subdivision, southeast of Houston. Ghose, who lived in Sugar Land and was 43 at trial, had harassed and stalked Amanda for years, she testified. She said he sent texts saying the fires of hell were within her husband, delivered religious materials to the home and was harassing, stalking and at times terrorizing her. She reported the conduct to League City police in January 2017 and had a court case against him over stalking and trespassing, with police orders keeping him away from the house.

A neighbor's security camera recorded the shooting after Ghose came to the home. Wayne Harris was shot about seven times in the body and head and died. Amanda Harris was shot twice, in the arm and leg, and survived. She testified that Ghose pointed a gun at her head but it did not fire, allowing her to escape. Investigators recovered 12 shell casings, all fired from a .40 caliber Glock handgun, while the Harrises owned 9 mm handguns. Two children in the household, a girl of 11 and a boy of 17, were home and called 911. Neither is named here. Ghose left before officers arrived.

League City police handled the investigation. Ghose was detained the next day, June 29, 2017, at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint near Las Cruces, New Mexico, while driving a 2011 Toyota Corolla. He told investigators he had been assaulted and forced to defend himself, and self defense remained his position at trial. The date of his police interview was not given, and the agency whose investigators conducted it was not named.

The neighbor's video and ballistic evidence were central to the state's case because every recovered casing came from a .40 caliber Glock rather than the Harrises' handguns. Amanda Harris testified for the state about the years of stalking before the shooting. Ghose was tried in the 122nd District Court of Galveston County under cause number 17-CR-2032. The jury found him guilty on January 23, 2020. Trial coverage also listed a stalking charge, but how that charge was resolved was not stated.

Judge John Ellisor sentenced Ghose to 50 years for murder and 20 years for aggravated assault, with the terms running concurrently. The sentencing was reported on March 3, 2020, while the appellate docket records the sentence as imposed on March 5, 2020. Ghose dismissed his attorney and represented himself at the punishment hearing, where he questioned his former wife and testified about his dog and about physical and spiritual planes of existence.

Ghose appealed in case 14-20-00313-CR. The Fourteenth Court of Appeals issued a memorandum opinion on February 3, 2022, affirming the conviction and 50-year sentence, and the mandate issued on February 29, 2024. The docket shows a further motion filed on May 27, 2025, and disposed of on June 12, 2025, with no action taken. The 50-year sentence stands.

The video is a police interview-room recording running about 135 minutes. It shows Ghose's interview after his arrest, without narration or a presenter.
