Robert Glenn Earley was convicted in Carlsbad in May 2015 of first degree murder, first degree kidnapping and tampering with evidence in the death of Emily Rebecca Lambert, and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Lambert, 30, taught at O. Henry Elementary School in Garland, Texas, part of the Richardson Independent School District, and was the mother of two young daughters. Earley, 33, lived in Euless, Texas, and worked in the oil fields of southeastern New Mexico. They had been dating for only a few months when Lambert drove from North Texas to Carlsbad, New Mexico, at the end of February 2014 to spend a weekend with him. They stayed in a Carlsbad motel.

On the night of March 1, 2014, they argued at the Blue Cactus Lounge after another man spoke to Lambert. According to the account in the New Mexico Supreme Court opinion that later reviewed the case, Earley repeatedly kicked Lambert in the head until she was unconscious after she said she was leaving. He drove her about 11.7 miles out of town to a property on Potash Mines Road, beat her with an air pump, tied a rope around her neck, attached it to his vehicle and dragged her behind a barn. He then struck her with a bar. She died of blunt force trauma and ligature strangulation.

Earley reported Lambert missing on March 2, 2014, and told an officer she had gone off with another man. At the station in Carlsbad on March 4, he gave the recorded police interview presented here and repeated that account. After a polygraph examination that day, he said he had followed Lambert and an unknown man and that the man had struck her with a pipe. Later that evening, Earley admitted kicking Lambert unconscious, driving her out of town, beating her with an air pump and dragging her. He led investigators to her body, which was found behind a ranch building near Loving, New Mexico.

On March 5, 2014, Earley gave a further recorded statement saying Lambert never regained consciousness at the property. He was arrested that day and charged on March 14, 2014. He pleaded not guilty in March 2014. Before trial, he moved to suppress all three statements he had given law enforcement. The motion was denied, and the statements were admitted.

Earley's jury trial began April 28, 2015, in Carlsbad and ran nearly three weeks. The jury convicted him on all three counts in May 2015. The murder was found to have been committed during a kidnapping, an aggravating circumstance. On direct appeal, Earley raised eight issues, including the refusal to suppress his statements, the admission of crime scene and autopsy photographs, limits placed on his pharmacology expert, and the sufficiency of the evidence. The New Mexico Supreme Court rejected all eight and affirmed the convictions. Its opinion was dated May 23, 2016, and the decision was reported in the press on May 19 and 20, 2016.
