An Okanogan County jury on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, found Roy Parker Rasmussen guilty of murder in the first degree with a special firearm allegation in the shooting death of Siri Carina Zosel, 46, at an Oroville residence.

Rasmussen, then 70, of Okanogan, Washington, shot Zosel around mid-April 2022 at the home on Westlake Road in Oroville, Okanogan County. Zosel, who lived in Oroville, and Rasmussen had been in a dating relationship, described in some reports as lasting about two years.

A friend who had not heard from Zosel went to the home but could not speak with her and found Rasmussen defensive. The friend's husband later entered, saw Zosel on the floor and was told by Rasmussen that she had been deceased about two days. The visit led to a domestic-dispute call at 8:16 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2022.

Deputies arrived about 8:31 p.m. and found Zosel deceased inside with Rasmussen and another adult male. Rasmussen was arrested for first-degree murder, transported for an interview and confessed to detectives that he shot Zosel. Bond was reported at $1.5 million.

The Washington State Patrol crime lab assisted with evidence collection. The case included the confession, physical evidence and witness accounts of the delayed contact and Rasmussen's demeanor. Early official reports did not detail extensive concealment or scene staging beyond Rasmussen remaining at the residence with the body and initially limiting access when the concerned friend checked on Zosel.

Public investigative releases at the time of the arrest said no motive or events leading up to the killing had been released. Later trial coverage described the prosecution as presenting the shooting as premeditated. Specific personal motive details were not widely published in verified news summaries, and early public statements focused on the confession and timeline rather than detailed conflicting accounts. Investigators noted Zosel had not been heard from for some time before the friends checked on her.

Only Rasmussen was charged as the defendant, and Zosel was the victim. Sentencing was tentatively set for August 21, 2024. He faced a maximum of life in prison without the possibility of parole. The sentence imposed has not been widely reported.
