Nikolas Jacob Cruz was sentenced on November 2, 2022, to 34 consecutive life terms without parole after pleading guilty to all 34 counts in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Cruz, 19, shot and killed 17 people and wounded 17 others at the school on the afternoon of February 14, 2018. Fourteen of the dead were students and three were staff.

Officers arrested him without incident at about 3:41 p.m. in the Wyndham Lakes neighbourhood of Coral Springs, about two miles from the school. He was taken to a hospital emergency room and then booked into the Broward County Jail.

Cruz was charged with 17 counts of premeditated first-degree murder and 17 counts of attempted first-degree murder. Broward Sheriff's Office detectives questioned him on video after the arrest.

He pleaded guilty to all 34 counts on October 20, 2021. A penalty-phase trial to decide between death and life began on July 18, 2022. On October 13, 2022, the jury found him eligible for the death penalty but could not agree unanimously to impose it.
