Jonathan Paul Koppenhaver, the mixed martial arts fighter known as War Machine, was sentenced on June 5, 2017, to life in prison with parole eligibility after 36 years for attacking his former girlfriend, adult film actress Christy Mack, and her boyfriend, Corey Thomas, at her Las Vegas home on August 8, 2014.

Koppenhaver, then 32, walked into a bedroom where Mack and Thomas were in bed. He punched Thomas, bit his face and choked him, then ordered him to leave and not call police.

Koppenhaver beat Mack until she lost consciousness, kicked her, cut her with a kitchen knife, sawed off her hair, attempted to rape her and took her phone. Mack suffered 18 broken facial bones, a nose broken in two places, missing teeth, a ruptured liver, a fractured rib and blindness in her left eye.

He fled and was found on August 15, 2014, in Simi Valley, California, after posts to his Twitter account were traced through the phone's location. U.S. Marshals and local police arrested him after he resisted, and he was returned to Nevada.

On October 14, 2014, Koppenhaver was found hanging in his cell. He was revived and placed on suicide watch.

The 36 counts included attempted murder, kidnapping, sexual assault with a weapon, domestic battery, coercion and obstruction. The trial, first set for September 2015 and postponed twice, began in February 2017. The jury deadlocked on two attempted-murder counts and convicted on the rest. Overall, it convicted him on March 20, 2017, of 29 of 36 felony counts.
