Michele Williams Questioned in Her Husband's Death
Michele Williams was convicted of murdering her husband, Gregory "Greg" Williams, in Keller, Texas, and sentenced to 60 years in prison. On September 29, 2014, after nearly seven hours of deliberation, jurors found her guilty of murder and tampering with physical evidence, the firearm, but not guilty of a tampering count concerning her husband's body. On September 30, the jury assessed 60 years for murder and 10 years for tampering. The court ordered concurrent sentences, and she must serve 30 years before parole eligibility. Greg Williams, 40, lived with Michele Williams and their 4-year-old daughter in a gated community in Keller. Michele Williams kept the family books. At trial, a certified public accountant called their finances grossly mismanaged; a defense lawyer said Greg Williams brought in more than $500,000 in 2010 and more than $800,000 in 2011. Three life insurance policies totaled $800,000, each with a two-year suicide clause: Gerber Life, $150,000 (August 2011), naming their daughter; Garden Life, $150,000 (May 2008), and Pavonia, $500,000 (January 2009), both naming Michele Williams. Keller police were dispatched around 4:40 a.m. on October 13, 2011, after a 911 call about an intruder. Michele Williams said a man had entered, shot her husband and hit her in the head. Officers saw swelling on her face. Greg Williams lay in bed under the covers with a gunshot wound to the head, the bedroom television blaring. Their daughter was asleep on a living room couch. A gun, shell casings and a large wrench lay close together by the back door. Police found no forced entry, and canine searches found no evidence of an intruder. Keller police interviewed Williams for about five hours, including breaks, without arresting her then. She said her husband had shot himself. In a handwritten statement, she wrote that she had wiped the gun and his right hand, hit her own cheek to raise a bruise and pried at the back door to keep her daughter from ever knowing her father had killed himself. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide. At trial, chief medical examiner Dr. Nizam Peerwani testified that it was clearly not a contact gunshot wound. Williams was arrested on January 9, 2012, and charged with murder, tampering with physical evidence and making a false report. In television interview clips played to jurors, she again described an intruder and said the real shooter was letting her take the blame. One of her sons testified that she asked him to have friends frame Greg Williams's former wife by firing a pistol into a sweater and hiding it in the woman's car. He did not do it. In October 2013, Williams pleaded guilty to deadly conduct and tampering with physical evidence under a deal calling for 18 years for tampering and 2 years for deadly conduct. She was in custody from January 2014, when she reportedly said she had miscarried twins at eight months. Authorities later said they doubted she had ever been pregnant. At her February 10, 2014, sentencing hearing before Judge Scott Wisch, she said she was not guilty. The guilty pleas were thrown out, and Wisch recused himself. Jury selection in her murder trial was under way on September 22, 2014, in the 396th District Court in Tarrant County before Judge George Gallagher. Prosecutors argued that she killed her husband to collect insurance money. The defense argued that he had killed himself. On December 22, 2016, the Second Court of Appeals in Fort Worth affirmed both convictions, rejecting challenges to the admission of her police statements, the sufficiency of the murder evidence and the medical examiner's testimony. Rehearing was denied on January 26, 2017. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals refused discretionary review on June 28, 2017.
