Markeith Loyd Police Interview After the Nine-Day Manhunt (Aurace Crime)
Markeith Loyd was convicted in the killings of Sade Dixon, her unborn child and Orlando Police Lt. Debra Clayton, receiving a life sentence in the Dixon case and a death sentence for Clayton's murder. Loyd was 41 and living in Orlando, Florida, in December 2016. His criminal record included cocaine trafficking and battery on a law enforcement officer. He had dated Dixon, 24, for a few months, and she was pregnant. They argued over her smoking during the pregnancy, and her family opposed the relationship. Dixon lived with her family in the Pine Hills area of Orange County, where her brother, Ronald Stewart Jr., also lived. On December 13, 2016, Loyd went to the family home and asked for Dixon. They argued outside, and her brother came out. Loyd shot Dixon, killing her and her unborn child, and critically wounded Stewart, who survived. Investigators identified Loyd as the suspect on December 14, 2016, but he remained at large. On January 9, 2017, Loyd was recognized inside a Walmart Supercenter on West Princeton Street in Orange County while wearing a bulletproof vest. Clayton, 42, confronted him outside, and they exchanged gunfire. Clayton was struck four times, and Loyd fired a final shot into her neck as she lay on the ground. Later that day, Orange County sheriff's Deputy Norman Lewis was killed in a traffic crash while searching for Loyd. A nine-day manhunt ended January 17, 2017, when Loyd was arrested at a house in Orlando's Carver Shores neighborhood. He was severely injured during the arrest. Records described officers kicking his face, striking him with rifles and punching him, and he lost an eye. Hours later, an Orlando police detective and an Orange County Sheriff's Office detective questioned him for about 45 minutes in an Orlando Police Department interview room. Loyd initially said he knew nothing about the deaths. He later said Dixon had pulled a gun on him and that he disarmed her, said her brother had been involved, and said he took his own weapon back during a struggle. He never explained how the confrontation ended in Dixon's death. The recording was obtained and reported in March 2020. It shows officers and deputies joking and photographing Loyd on their phones while he asked for medical help. His defense sought to show the video to the jury as evidence of mistreatment, and Circuit Judge Leticia Marques took up the motion in March 2020. The defense also gave notice of an insanity defense in the Clayton case. On October 16, 2019, after less than five hours of deliberation, an Orange County jury rejected Loyd's self defense argument and convicted him of first degree murder, first degree murder of an unborn child, attempted first degree murder, two counts of attempted felony murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The jury recommended life in prison on October 23, 2019, and he is serving a life sentence in that case. A separate jury convicted Loyd in Clayton's killing in November 2021 and unanimously recommended death in December 2021. On March 3, 2022, Marques sentenced him to death for the murder of Lt. Debra Clayton. She also imposed life sentences for attempted first degree murder and carjacking with a firearm, 15 years for firearm possession by a convicted felon and five years for aggravated assault. The Florida Supreme Court affirmed the convictions and death sentence on November 16, 2023, in case number SC2022-0378, rejecting 12 of his 13 claims. It agreed the trial court should not have allowed music over a photo montage of Clayton at sentencing but held the error did not require reversal. An attorney for Loyd petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court in April 2024. Loyd remains on death row. He appeared in court on April 23, 2026, seeking to overturn the death sentence and was due back within two weeks to seek an evidentiary hearing. The video is a narrated analysis built around the police interview-room footage, not raw footage alone. It runs about 61 minutes and covers the interview described above.
