Chandler Halderson Sheriff's Interview in His Parents' Deaths (Matt Orchard)

Chandler Halderson was convicted of killing and dismembering his parents at their Windsor, Wisconsin, home in 2021 and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of extended supervision.

Halderson was 23 and lived with his parents in Dane County, north of Madison. His father, Bart Halderson, was 50, and his mother, Krista Halderson, was 53. Chandler had falsely told them he was enrolled at Madison Area Technical College, worked at American Family Insurance, had been hired by SpaceX and was moving to Florida. He had stopped attending the college, the insurance company had no employment record for him, and he had never applied to SpaceX. He created email accounts in the names of college staff, including Alyssa Brandt and Daniel Spieth, and forwarded his father correspondence he had written himself.

On June 29, 2021, Bart called Madison College and spoke with Omar Jobe in a recorded conversation. Jobe said Chandler owed more than $2,000, which was why no transcript would be released, and had never been admitted to the program his father believed he had completed. Jobe also said the two advisers Bart asked about did not work at the college. Bart then texted his son that he had spoken to Omar Jobe and proposed a meeting on campus.

Prosecutors said Chandler killed both parents at the family home on July 1, 2021, the day of Bart's last text messages. Investigators found large pools of blood in the basement and human bone fragments in the fireplace and its ash trap. Both bodies were dismembered and the remains scattered.

On July 7, 2021, Chandler reported his parents missing to the Dane County Sheriff's Office. He said they had driven with another couple to the family cabin at White Lake in northern Wisconsin for the Fourth of July weekend and never arrived. A torso later identified as Bart's was found July 8, 2021, on rural property in the Town of Cottage Grove in Dane County, with the identification confirmed July 12, 2021. Krista's remains were recovered July 14, 2021, from state Department of Natural Resources land in the Town of Roxbury near Sauk City and identified July 30, 2021.

Detectives Brian Shunk and William Hendrickson interviewed Chandler at the Dane County Sheriff's Office on the evening of July 8, 2021, for nearly two hours. Asked to account for each day from June 30 to July 7, he repeatedly corrected himself, lost track of which day was under discussion and asked for headache medicine. He maintained the cabin account and denied being present when anything happened to his parents. Shunk testified that Halderson moved from person of interest to suspect at about 3:30 p.m. that day, when the remains were found in Cottage Grove. Near the end, Shunk told him, "We know your parents are no longer with us and we know the reason why." Halderson asked for a lawyer, was arrested on charges of providing false information about a missing person and booked into the county jail. Homicide charges followed the identification of the remains. The recorded college call, fabricated emails, and blood and bone evidence formed the core of the state's case.

A jury in Dane County Circuit Court convicted Halderson on January 20, 2022, on all eight counts: two counts of first-degree intentional homicide, two counts of mutilating a corpse, two counts of hiding a corpse, and two counts of providing false information about a missing person. Judge John Hyland sentenced him on March 17, 2022, to life in prison without the possibility of extended supervision. On April 19, 2023, Hyland vacated the two hiding a corpse convictions as lesser included offenses of mutilating a corpse, without affecting the life sentences. The Wisconsin Court of Appeals affirmed the conviction in November 2025. On June 17, 2026, the Wisconsin Supreme Court denied review and the conviction was affirmed. Halderson remains in prison.

The video presents a narrated analysis using police interview-room footage and runs about 67 minutes. It covers the interview described above.
