Kierra Laird Questioned in Her Infant Son's Death

Cordero Webber Jr., five months old, died on November 4, 2011 in Jacksonville, Florida, of blunt force head trauma, with healing rib fractures and severe malnutrition also found at autopsy. This recording is the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office interview of his mother, Kierra Monet Hayes Laird, conducted around the time of the death. She was not charged with causing it: she pleaded guilty to child neglect and was sentenced to one year in jail. The child's father, Cordero Anthony Webber, was convicted of manslaughter of a child and aggravated child neglect and sentenced to 45 years.

The child's mother, Kierra Monet Hayes Laird, pleaded guilty to child neglect and was sentenced the same day to one year in jail, followed by two years of community control and five years of probation. She was not charged with homicide. No appellate ruling for either parent has been publicly reported.

Cordero Webber Jr. was found not breathing on November 4, 2011, at the Forest Gardens apartments in Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office ruled the death a homicide, and the autopsy identified blunt force trauma to the head as the cause. The medical examiner documented bruises and abrasions on the cheeks, chin, ears, back of the head, chest and elbow. Five previously fractured ribs were in various stages of healing, indicating earlier injury.

The autopsy also found severe malnutrition, with no body fat and little or no food in the stomach or bowels. Brain development had stopped at about half the normal size. The child had extensive bed bug bites and severe sores on his face.

The boy was born in July 2011 and lived with his parents, who were both 24 years old at the time of his death. Other children lived in the home. They are not named in reporting. The boy had not been seen by a doctor since he was discharged from hospital after his birth, five months earlier.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office investigated and interviewed both parents. Laird's recorded interview with Jacksonville Sheriff's Office detectives was conducted around the time of the death in November 2011. The exact interview date is not established in reporting. The parents told police they fed the boy cereal and baby food, along with formula, but said he spat it out. They said they knew he needed medical attention but never got around to it, and that they applied ointment to his bed bug sores instead of seeking treatment.

Both admitted using marijuana in the home with the children present. Webber admitted force-feeding the baby milk because he spat it out. Laird told police she had been negligent in getting medical attention. She said that when she asked Webber about the bruises, he told her the child was fine and she did not press it. Both parents were charged with child neglect in November 2011, and the sheriff's office said the charges could be upgraded as the investigation continued.

The video is a police interview-room recording of about 230 minutes, presented here in four parts. It shows the interview itself, without narration or a presenter.
