Kiernan Scott Brown Questioned in Kaylee Brock, Julie Mooney Killings

Kiernan Scott Brown was sentenced to 70 to 100 years in prison on each of two second-degree murder counts on November 2, 2022, for killing Kaylee Ann Brock and Julie Ann Mooney in Michigan. He received no credit for time served. Brown had pleaded guilty but mentally ill on August 19, 2022. At sentencing, Ingham County Circuit Judge Rosemarie Aquilina told him, "Sorry doesn't bring them back."

Brown initially pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder in 2020 under an agreement that would have set his minimum sentences at 30 to 50 years. Aquilina rejected it, saying, "In good conscience, I cannot abide by this plea agreement."

Brock, 26, of Holt, and Mooney, 32, of Williamston, were killed within hours of each other on May 9 and 10, 2019. Brock was found dead in her apartment in Holt; Mooney was found in a room at the Knights Inn motel in Meridian Township. Both died of multiple blows to the head with a blunt object. Brown later told the court he killed both with a hammer. Brock knew him from a young adult church they both attended. Mooney had met him as a coworker at a Chili's restaurant in Okemos. Police said motel surveillance video showed Brown with Mooney. He had planned to kill four women after trying and failing to get into a former girlfriend's house, and killed two before police caught up with him.

Brown, 27, lived in Delta Township, Michigan, in May 2019. He had three prior felony convictions and was on parole after serving about three and a half years in prison for assault by strangulation and domestic violence. He was wanted for a parole violation stemming from another domestic assault days earlier, and deputies were looking for him to serve a petition for involuntary commitment for mental health treatment. His attorney later said he had been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, antisocial personality disorder, borderline personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

At 2:41 a.m. on Friday, May 10, 2019, a former girlfriend with a personal protection order against Brown called 911 to report that he was trying to get into her home. Ingham County Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth said Brown had sent her a message saying he loved her and had spared her. Sheriff's deputies stopped Brown on Interstate 69 early that morning. During the traffic stop, he showed them cellphone photos of the women's bodies. He was charged with two counts of open murder and two counts of armed robbery, and as a habitual offender, and was held without bond in the Eaton County jail.

In his police interview in an interview room after his arrest, Brown answers questions about the two women and how he knew them, then describes how they were killed. Near the end, he says he had tried for years to get help for his mental health, including after his release from prison.

Michigan Department of Corrections records also list a 25 to 60 year sentence, imposed in Eaton County in March 2020, for the April 30, 2019 domestic assault, to which Brown pleaded no contest. In June 2025, a Muskegon County jury convicted him of assault with a dangerous weapon and possessing a weapon as a prisoner over a March 2024 incident. He is held at Oaks Correctional Facility, with an earliest release date in 2099.
