Jamie Elizabeth Scholer Questioned in Clement Nason's Death
Jamie Elizabeth Scholer, 37, was charged with two counts of criminal vehicular homicide in the death of Clement Nason, 61, in a hit-and-run north of Deer River, Minnesota. Both lived in Deer River, a town in Itasca County. Published reports describe no relationship between them. At about 5:12 a.m. on Sunday, September 17, 2023, the Minnesota State Patrol received a report of a fatal hit-and-run on Highway 6 at its intersection with Golf Course Road. Nason, a pedestrian, was found dead in the northbound lane. The State Patrol said the collision likely happened between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m., during dense fog, and that the driver may not have known they had hit someone. The vehicle left the scene. Troopers found pieces of broken black plastic on the road. The State Patrol identified Scholer's Toyota Highlander and met her at Cohasset City Hall to inspect it. Broken black plastic on the lower part of the passenger side bumper appeared to match the pieces. Scholer told authorities she thought she had missed hitting Nason. She was arrested and taken to jail, where officers saw signs of drug use and noted that she had a difficult time remaining still. Records cited in news coverage show that Scholer received a DWI in August 2015. The recorded interview was made on September 19, 2023, by the camera's own clock. According to the criminal complaint as reported, Scholer said she was driving north on Highway 6 when she saw a man lying on the road. She said she swerved to miss him but could not, and called it an accident. Scholer said she did not stay because she thought someone was trying to steal her car. She told authorities she did not call 911 or help Nason before leaving the scene. She said she had used marijuana and methamphetamine the afternoon before the crash and smoked methamphetamine the morning after. The charges were reported on Thursday, September 21, 2023, with reports saying she faced up to 10 years in prison and that her first court appearance was set for that day. She is presumed innocent of the charges. As of November 1, 2026, no plea, verdict, sentence or dismissal has been reported in the case.
