Guard Jailed in Alleged Police Impersonation
Brenden Wysynski, an 18-year-old parking garage security guard, was transported to jail after an Albuquerque police officer encountered him patrolling a highway and contacting a driver on September 9, 2019. Wysynski claimed the car had been traveling 120 miles per hour, using what was described as his "invisible radar." He was driving his unmarked personal vehicle, wearing jeans and no uniform. He had an eBay Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office badge, handcuffs in the car and a handgun secured in a lockbox beneath the driver's seat. Shortly after contacting the driver, Wysynski waved to a passing Albuquerque police officer. The officer doubled back, noticed unusual details and checked the vehicle's registration, which returned to Wysynski rather than a government agency. During questioning, Wysynski made a series of statements that were exposed as lies, then began rebuilding his account almost immediately. Another false claim was later investigated and disproved outside the recorded exchange. During the trip to jail, Wysynski said he did not know his wife's phone number and that his family would not know it either. He also said he had been shot at, his pregnant wife was almost due and he disliked his security job because of the management. He was looking for work. The roughly 46-minute video is a police interview-room recording, without narration or a presenter. It shows the interview itself and, from 22:25 onward, includes previously unpublished material consisting mostly of audio of Wysynski being transported to jail.
