Lewis Sentenced in Lakewood Neighbor Assault
Benjamin Gregory Lewis, then 37, pleaded guilty on August 25, 2016, to two counts of second-degree assault after stabbing his Lakewood, Washington, neighbor Amiya T. Johnson four times during a fight on April 10. Pierce County Superior Court Judge John McCarthy sentenced Lewis to two years, two months in prison. Lewis, who did not know Johnson's name, fought with him in their apartment complex parking lot. Witnesses saw Lewis on top of Johnson attempting to strangle him and holding a steak knife, which he used to inflict four stab wounds to Johnson's neck and upper body. Lewis fled in a dark-colored Kia. He was a former Army combat medic who had served in Iraq, had been detailed to Ranger school at Fort Benning, Georgia, and later that night disclosed that he had been diagnosed with PTSD. He was working in construction as a concrete finisher. Officers found Johnson lying supine and apparently incoherent. A knife blade broken from its handle lay next to him, with a glass crack pipe and a 211 Steel Reserve beer can nearby. Officers saw multiple puncture wounds, and a medic bystander was providing basic life support. Police contacted a neighbor who had witnessed much of the fight and Amber Lance, Lewis's girlfriend. The witness made allegations suggesting Lance had been involved in the crime. Officer Nick McClelland located Lewis's Kia and, with other officers, conducted a high-risk traffic stop. Lewis was cooperative and said he would answer questions "to a point." He said he had left his residence and was headed to "nowhere." Asked about blood on him, Lewis said, "there was a scuffle," involving "a dude that kept fucking with me," whom he described only as a fat black male. When McClelland asked what happened, Lewis replied, "I was trying to kill him." He denied using weapons and said he had only tried to choke the fat black dude. Lewis, Lance and the witness were taken to the Lakewood police station for questioning. Lewis initially pleaded not guilty before entering his guilty pleas. Lewis was ordered to pay $36,093.34 in restitution, including $1,956.24 for crime victims compensation and $34,137.10 to "Community Health Plan" for Johnson's medical treatment. He also was ordered to pay $800 in court and justice-related costs. A ten-year no contact order was issued for Lewis in relation to Amiya Johnson, the longest legally allowed under the maximum sentence for the crime. His criminal history included convictions in 2008 for 3rd degree theft and driving under the influence from the same incident, and another driving under the influence conviction in 2010. The Real World Police video is a police interview-room recording of Lewis's interrogation and runs about 43 minutes. It presents the interview itself without narration or a presenter. Johnson's first name is incorrectly shown as "Amaya" at the end of the video.
