A Nassau County jury convicted Kimberly Lee Kessler of first-degree murder and grand theft auto on December 9, 2021, in the disappearance of her co-worker, Joleen Cummings, from the Fernandina Beach and Yulee area of Florida.

Cummings, a 34-year-old mother of three and longtime stylist at Tangles Hair Salon, was last seen leaving the salon around 5 p.m. on May 12, 2018, after closing with Kessler. She never returned home, failed to pick up her children on Mother's Day, which was also her birthday, and has never been found.

Kessler had worked at the salon for about a month under the alias Jennifer Sybert. She had used at least 17 to 18 false identities across multiple states for roughly two decades. Prosecutors said Kessler feared the more established stylist would expose her true identity after Cummings called her "fake" during a confrontation and said she planned to look her up.

Evidence of planning included earlier purchases of large zip ties and online searches related to Cummings. That evening, Kessler bought cleaning supplies, heavy-duty trash bags, gloves, ammonia and an electric carving knife. Surveillance video showed her moving large bags and bins to dumpsters, driving Cummings' vehicle and abandoning it in a Home Depot parking lot early the next morning.

Kessler stopped reporting to work and quit when police contacted her. Officers found her sleeping in her car at an interstate rest area on May 16 and arrested her for vehicle theft. During questioning, she admitted that her real name was Kimberly Lee Kessler and disclosed her long history of living under aliases, but maintained that she did not know where Cummings was.

Investigators found blood linked to Cummings in the salon and on items connected to Kessler. The case also included multiple surveillance videos documenting Kessler's movements and purchases, her internet search history and fake identification documents.

Kessler was sentenced on January 27, 2022, to life in prison without the possibility of parole for murder, plus a concurrent five-year term for theft. She remains incarcerated in the Florida state prison system, and appeals and post-conviction challenges have not overturned the conviction.
