Florida Mother Convicted in Infant Son's Death

A Sarasota County jury convicted Lily Scheip of manslaughter in August 2025 in the death of her 14-week-old son, Dominic, and she was sentenced on December 29, 2025, to just over 10 years in prison followed by four years of probation.

Scheip, 31 at the time of her arrest and 35 by the time of her trial, lived on Spring Oaks Circle in Sarasota County, Florida. In September 2021, when Dominic was about two months old, he suffered two broken legs while in her care. Scheip said he had fallen from a recliner chair, and the injuries were recorded as an apparent accidental fall.

On the night of November 8, 2021, a neighbor called 911 after seeing Scheip run from her home carrying her unresponsive son. She brought him to another neighbor who worked as a nurse, who began CPR before paramedics arrived. Responders saw no obvious injuries. Dominic was taken to hospital and airlifted to Tampa General Hospital, where doctors found head trauma and no brain activity. He was removed from life support and died on November 10, 2021.

The medical examiner found bruising on his forehead, a partially healed skull fracture, hemorrhaging in the brain, and at least two recent impact injuries to the back of his head. The autopsy also documented the healed fractures in both legs from September. The cause of death was given as trauma from blunt impacts to the head, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office investigated. Scheip told detectives she was the only person caring for Dominic when he was found unresponsive, and investigators concluded the recent head injuries had been inflicted while he was in her exclusive care. She continued to attribute the September leg fractures to the fall from the recliner. Scheip was arrested on March 15, 2022, about four months after the death, and charged with second-degree murder. The date on which the interview was recorded is not established in any coverage reviewed, so it is not possible to say from the public record whether it took place on the night of November 8, 2021 or later in the investigation.

Scheip was held in custody for nearly four years awaiting trial. Before the trial began, the second-degree murder charge was reduced to manslaughter, which under Florida law covers unlawful or reckless conduct causing death without the depraved mind required for second-degree murder. Her sentence included credit for time served since her 2022 arrest, leaving roughly five years to serve. Assistant State Attorney Karen Fraivillig said, "Ten years is not enough. Nevertheless, I understand the judge's rationale."

Family members spoke at the sentencing hearing. Joseph Scheip, described as a brother-in-law, said Dominic's death had cast a permanent shadow over the family. Kate Scheip, the baby's grandmother, said she could not imagine Lily Scheip hurting her grandson intentionally. The December 29, 2025 sentencing is the most recent development reported, and no appeal has been reported.

The video is a Sarasota County Sheriff's Office interview-room recording that runs about 112 minutes. It shows the interview itself, without narration or a presenter.
