California Woman Convicted in Husband's Murder

A Kern County jury convicted Sabrina Limon on October 5, 2017, of murder and three related charges in the shooting death of her husband, Robert Limon, at a BNSF Railway yard in Tehachapi, California.

Robert Limon, 38, was a BNSF railroad worker in Kern County. Sabrina Limon was having an affair with Jonathan Hearn, a Redlands Fire Department firefighter. Prosecutors told jurors that a $300,000 life insurance policy on Robert Limon was part of the motive and that Sabrina Limon and Hearn had each bought prepaid burner phones to communicate.

Robert Limon was shot twice inside a BNSF building on August 17, 2014. Co-worker Shaun Ware found his body. Deputies described the scene as disturbed, with a broken light bulb and blood on a refrigerator. Twelve usable fingerprints recovered from the warehouse matched neither Sabrina Limon nor Hearn.

The Kern County Sheriff's Office investigated. Hearn admitted shooting Robert Limon and agreed under a negotiated plea to testify against Sabrina Limon. Accounts differ on whether the plea was guilty or no contest and place it in late 2016 or January 2017, to voluntary manslaughter among other counts. Investigators recovered text messages and a letter between Sabrina Limon and Hearn.

Sheriff's detectives interviewed Sabrina Limon in November 2014, about three months after the killing and shortly before her first arrest. She denied wanting her husband dead or asking Hearn to kill him. She admitted the affair and said she kept it secret because she feared its exposure. She said she believed Hearn's precautions were meant to protect the relationship, not plan a murder, and that her husband's death shocked her. When detectives said Hearn was in custody and would blame her, she said she did not believe he would. Jurors later found that she had given Hearn directions to her husband's workplace and told him his work schedule. She was arrested again in January 2017.

After a trial lasting more than three weeks, a jury of nine women and three men found Sabrina Limon guilty of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, soliciting murder, and being an accessory after the fact. It acquitted her of attempted murder and poisoning, meaning mingling a harmful substance in food or drink.

On February 21, 2018, Kern County Superior Court Judge John R. Brownlee denied a motion for a new trial and sentenced her to 25 years to life plus a consecutive 16 months. Her new attorney had argued prosecutorial misconduct, inadequate prior representation, and aggressive police interrogation tactics. In October 2022, California's Fifth District Court of Appeal upheld the conviction and sentence, rejecting claims of prosecutorial misconduct, insufficient evidence, juror exposure to media coverage, and uncorroborated accomplice testimony. Hearn was sentenced on November 16, 2017, to 25 years and 4 months, with about three and a half years of credit for time served.

The video is the police interview-room recording of Sabrina Limon and runs about 182 minutes in four parts. It contains the interview itself, without narration or a presenter, and jurors watched it during her trial.
