Renard Lydell Carter pleaded guilty to three second-degree murder charges and received consecutive sentences totaling nearly 90 years for the deaths of Keona Sade Foote, her unborn child and 2-year-old Miyona Zayla Lee-Miller in Rochester, Minnesota.

Carter entered the pleas July 15, 2021, in Olmsted County District Court and was sentenced December 9, 2021, with credit for time already served. During his plea, he said the motive involved an argument over the pregnancy and relationship issues.

Carter and Foote were in a relationship, and he had lived with her for about a month at her apartment in the Olympik Village complex. Foote was in the first trimester of pregnancy, and her daughter also lived there. Carter had a prior criminal history that included domestic-related offenses and had been released from prison several months earlier.

The incident occurred on or about September 10, 2020. Rochester police responded to the apartment September 13 and found the victims deceased. Carter later admitted responsibility for the three deaths, and portions of the events were recorded and shared on social media.

Carter left Minnesota and was located the following day in South Carolina after authorities received information about his location and possible further plans. During his arrest, officers shot and wounded him after he emerged with what was later identified as a BB gun.

Evidence included crime scene findings, digital material shared online and Carter's admissions. He was charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of second-degree murder of an unborn child. Bail was set at $5 million.

Carter later sought to withdraw his plea. A competency evaluation was completed, and the request was denied. The Minnesota Court of Appeals upheld that decision. The most recent Minnesota Department of Corrections records show Carter remains incarcerated at MCF Rush City, with an anticipated release date in 2080.
