Brittany Gosney Questioned in Her Son's Death

Brittany Gosney, 29, pleaded guilty to murder and two counts of felony child endangering in the death of her 6-year-old son, James Hutchinson, and was sentenced in Ohio to 15 years to life plus 6 years, making her eligible for parole after 21 years.

Gosney lived in Middletown, Ohio, with James, his siblings and her boyfriend, James Hamilton, 43. James was a first grader. His siblings, aged 9 and 7 at the time, are not named in reporting. Authorities said Hamilton pressured Gosney to "get rid of" the children.

On February 26, 2021, Gosney drove the children to the Rush Run Wildlife Area in Preble County, Ohio, intending to abandon them. James grabbed a door of her van as she drove away and was dragged. Gosney told detectives she returned about 30 minutes later and found him dead in the parking lot. She drove his body home and left it in a spare room for about 48 hours. On February 28, Gosney and Hamilton drove to Lawrenceburg, Indiana, and threw the body into the Ohio River with a concrete block tied to it. Court records also alleged that they hog-tied James and his siblings by the hands and feet, put cloth in their mouths and left them that way for hours around the time of the death.

Gosney and Hamilton reported James missing at the Middletown police station at 10:16 a.m. on February 28, hours after disposing of his body. Police said their account of when he disappeared did not match their delay in calling, and discrepancies in their stories led to their arrests.

Middletown detectives questioned Gosney twice that day, first for about three hours and again around 7:15 p.m. with a Middletown detective, French, and a sheriff's detective, Forrer. During the first interview, Gosney said James "didn't want to get out of the van" and that "he tried to catch his balance. He didn't get to and fell and busted his head on the ground." She denied running him over and said she placed his body "nice and softly" in the van. In the second interview, she said she pulled forward while James held the door handle: "I do know he eventually let go of the handle, didn't hear anything; I had the music on." One surviving child, her daughter, told investigators that Gosney had dragged James but had not run him over.

The Preble County Sheriff's Office searched the Ohio River near the Interstate 275 bridge with dive teams from Kentucky, Indiana and the Cincinnati area. Flood conditions initially delayed the search, and James' body has never been recovered.

Gosney was indicted in March 2021 on 16 counts, including murder, involuntary manslaughter, endangering children, gross abuse of a corpse, kidnapping and abduction. She initially pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity and was found competent to stand trial in April 2021. She pleaded guilty on August 16, 2021, and the remaining 13 counts were dismissed under the plea agreement. On September 13, 2021, Butler County Common Pleas Judge Noah Powers II imposed the sentence and ordered her to register as a violent offender. Hamilton pleaded guilty in August 2021 to kidnapping, gross abuse of a corpse and two counts of child endangering. The same judge sentenced him on October 5, 2021, to a minimum of 15 years, with a stated potential of up to 19 years served. As of February 10, 2022, the Preble County sheriff said the case remained open because James' body had not been found. No appeal by Gosney has been publicly reported.

The video is a police interview-room recording that runs about 35 minutes. It presents the interview itself and begins with a short narrated introduction naming the people involved.
