Anthony Aiello Questioned in Karen Navarra's Death

Anthony Aiello, 91, was charged with murder after his stepdaughter, Karen Navarra, 67, was found dead in her San Jose, California, home, but he died before trial and was never convicted.

Navarra lived on Terra Noble Way. Police went to her home for a wellness check on September 13, 2018, after a co-worker became concerned when she did not come to work. Officers found her dead in a scene police said had been staged to look like a suicide. A knife had been placed in her hand, but evidence indicated she died from injuries caused by a different, heavier weapon.

Police placed her death on September 8, 2018, based on data from the Fitbit she was wearing. Aiello, whom police described as the last known person to see her alive, told detectives he had visited briefly that day to bring her pizza and that she was alive when he left. Police said the Fitbit recorded Navarra's heart rate spiking and then slowing to a stop while surveillance footage showed Aiello's car at her home.

Investigators serving a search warrant at Aiello's house on September 25, 2018, reported finding clothing with spots of blood and signs of a blood cleanup. Aiello told police the blood came from his frequently cutting himself. He was arrested that day and charged with murder.

The recording shows officers detaining Aiello, a detective telling him that the Fitbit timeline contradicted his account, and officers telling him he would be booked into the Santa Clara County jail. It appears to have been recorded on the day of his arrest; the exact date and location of the recording are not stated in the sources found.

Aiello pleaded not guilty, and a grand jury indicted him on August 7, 2019. He was held without bail in the Santa Clara County jail while his family sought his release because of his health. He was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center on August 22, 2019, and died there on September 10, 2019. The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office said the case would be dismissed, as is standard when a defendant dies before the case is resolved. Aiello was never tried or convicted, and the allegation against him was never proven in court.

The video is a police interview-room recording running about 93 minutes. It contains the interview itself and opens with a short narrated introduction naming the people involved.
