North Pridgen Questioned in Teresa Gorczyca's Death

North Samuel Cole Pridgen pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Teresa Janette Gorczyca in Jacksonville, Florida, and was sentenced to 30 years in Florida state prison followed by 10 years of probation.

Gorczyca was 27 and lived in Jacksonville's Sandalwood area. Pridgen gave his age as 28 during the interview. An arrest warrant described him as her boyfriend, while her friends called him her former boyfriend. Reports differ on whether the relationship was current.

Gorczyca was reported missing to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office on September 26, 2021. Surveillance video with audio showed her and Pridgen leaving his parents' home, where he lived, and walking toward a retention pond in the Sutton Lakes subdivision. Gorczyca told him to go home and not follow her. Pridgen returned alone about 38 minutes later and appeared wet.

Gorczyca's body was found hidden under brush and debris in the retention pond on September 29, 2021. The state attorney's office said Pridgen killed her at the lake, hid her body, then logged into her Facebook account and messaged her friends while posing as her in an attempt to obtain money.

After the killing, a friend picked Pridgen up nearby. According to the state attorney's office, Pridgen confessed to the friend, who later told police that Pridgen said he had killed Gorczyca and left her in the water. The report to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office led to a welfare check, a missing person bulletin and an investigation.

Detectives questioned Pridgen on September 27, 2021, the day after the missing person report. He said he had spent the day with Gorczyca at his house, that she walked home around 1 p.m., and that he stayed home before later playing basketball at a park. He denied telling anyone he had killed her and said he would be devastated if she were found in the water. Detectives confronted him with his friend's account, the surveillance footage and scratches on his arms and legs. Pridgen was arrested on March 29, 2022, nearly six months after Gorczyca's body was found, and held without bond in Duval County.

Pridgen pleaded guilty at a February 6, 2023, hearing. Judge Jeb Branham imposed the sentence on May 25, 2023. Assistant State Attorney Sheila Loizos prosecuted the case.

The video is an interview-room recording lasting about 94 minutes. It presents the police interview itself and begins with a short narrated introduction naming the people involved.
