Angel Arellano Interviewed in Estriplet Killing

Angel Arellano, who was 13 when taxi driver Hinso Estriplet was shot dead in Lehigh Acres, Florida, entered no-contest pleas to first degree murder and robbery with a firearm, was adjudicated guilty and received 40 years in prison followed by 10 years of probation.

Estriplet, 46, was a self-employed taxi driver in Lehigh Acres, an unincorporated community in Lee County in southwest Florida. On April 7, 2018, Arellano and Epimenio Leal, then 16, called for a taxi to a remote road. When Estriplet arrived, the teenagers approached his car and opened fire into it. The State Attorney's account does not state who fired which shots. They took his wallet, phone and a metal box containing an unspecified amount of money. Ricky Ligonde, then 20, drove the vehicle the group used to leave.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office identified and arrested all three within two days. During his interview with detectives, Arellano denied knowing anything about the taxi driver and placed himself at home that night before a detective confronted him, according to the uploader's description of the tape. That account is not corroborated by any record. The uploader's assertion that Arellano did not fire is also not established. The interview date is not documented.

On May 3, 2018, a Lee County grand jury indicted Ligonde, Leal and Arellano, each on one count of first degree murder and one count of robbery with a firearm. Arraignment was set for May 7, 2018. The first degree murder indictments placed Leal and Arellano in adult circuit court rather than juvenile court.

Ligonde cooperated with law enforcement and agreed to testify truthfully against Leal and Arellano as part of a plea agreement. He pleaded guilty to one count of second degree murder with a firearm and one count of robbery with a firearm as a principal. On March 11, 2019, he was sentenced in Lee County circuit court to 20 years in prison followed by one year of probation. He was 21 at sentencing.

Arellano and Leal each entered a plea of no contest to first degree murder and robbery with a firearm and were adjudicated guilty. On September 12, 2019, Circuit Judge Bruce Kyle sentenced each to 40 years in prison followed by 10 years of probation. Each sentence carries a 25-year minimum mandatory term under Florida's 10-20-Life statute. Because they were juveniles at the time of the offense, each is entitled to judicial review after serving 25 years. Arellano was 15 at sentencing and Leal was 17. Assistant State Attorneys Andreas Gardiner and Jennifer Justham prosecuted the cases. No appeal or other post-conviction development has been publicly reported.

The video is a police interview-room recording of Lee County Sheriff's Office detectives questioning Arellano and runs about 131 minutes, or roughly two hours and 12 minutes. It contains the interview itself and begins with a short narrated introduction naming the people involved. The uploader's title lists Arellano as 15, his age at sentencing, rather than 13, his age at the time of the offense.

Re: Angel Arellano Interviewed in Estriplet Killing

Ricky Ligonde pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder with a firearm and one count of robbery with a firearm as a principal, receiving 20 years in prison followed by one year of probation on March 11, 2019.

Ligonde was 20 and the oldest of the three defendants when Lee County Sheriff's Office detectives questioned him during the two-day investigation that followed the killing. He was not accused of firing a shot. The State Attorney's Office described him as the driver of the getaway vehicle.

A Lee County grand jury indicted Ligonde and the other two defendants in May 2018. His case was resolved first and separately.

His plea agreement required him to testify truthfully against both co-defendants. Ligonde was 21 when he was sentenced, six months before the two teenagers were sentenced.

The approximately 63-minute video is a police interview-room recording of the interview itself. It begins with a short narrated introduction naming the people involved.
