Andrew Howard Brannan, a decorated Vietnam veteran, was executed by lethal injection on January 13, 2015, at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification State Prison in Jackson for the 1998 murder of Laurens County sheriff's deputy Kyle Wayne Dinkheller, 22. Brannan was 66. The killing was recorded in full by the dashboard camera of Dinkheller's patrol car.

At 5:34 p.m. on January 12, 1998, Dinkheller stopped Brannan's pickup for speeding at about 98 mph on Whipple Crossing Road in Laurens County. The stop began routinely, but Brannan, then 49, became agitated when Dinkheller told him to take his hands out of his pockets. Brannan said "they can hang me," went to his truck and returned with an Iver Johnson M1 carbine.

The two exchanged fire. Dinkheller was hit nine times and wounded Brannan in the stomach. The final shot struck the deputy in the right eye. Brannan drove away and was found the next morning hiding in a sleeping bag under a camouflage tarp.

Brannan had served as an artillery officer with the 23rd Infantry Division from 1969 to 1971 and held a Bronze Star and two Army Commendation Medals. The Department of Veterans Affairs rated him 100 percent disabled in 1994 for depression and bipolar disorder. At trial, he pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, citing post-traumatic stress disorder.

The jury rejected the defense on the strength of the dashcam recording and convicted Brannan of murder on January 28, 2000. He was sentenced to death on January 30, 2000. The Georgia and United States supreme courts declined to intervene on the day of the execution, which was the first in the country in 2015.

Dinkheller, born in San Diego, joined the sheriff's office as a jailer in March 1995 and was certified as an officer in 1996. He was named Georgia's Deputy Sheriff of the Year for 1998 posthumously. The recording of his death has since been used in police academy training across the United States.

The video is a narrated analysis by JCS - Criminal Psychology and runs about 25 minutes. Rather than an interview-room interrogation, it uses the dashcam recording of the traffic stop and Brannan's later statements, with narration about the suspect's behavior and the detectives' technique over the dashcam recording and trial footage. It is not raw footage.
