It would be so sad sharing your birthday with your sister's day of death, especially since she died trying to surprise you. It's the worst kind of birthday surprise. She'll never be able to celebrate it again. :(

It appears she might have broken her nose because her nostrils don't look the same and there is a line or bruise going across it horizontally. I haven't noticed anything else though, where else do you see bruises?

Do you mean the dimple on the right side of her cheek, which is the left side of the images?

Does anyone know if that might be where she was shot?

Any fellow funeral directors that lurk these forums? I'm a licensed funeral director/embalmer in the U.S. This is a great in-depth description of embalming! I'll add a few comments. The moisturizer you mention in the beginning is usually put on the face and sometimes hands AFTER embalming to keep them from dehydrating as embalming is a dehydrating process. However soap is used to massage the body throughout the embalming as this helps promote fluid distribution to the extremities. One part you didn't mention is that sometimes this unfortunately doesn't solve the issue of distribution. Sometimes fluid does NOT reach all the extremities or left side of the face, since you typically inject through the right common carotid artery the right side of the face never really has an issue getting fluid. You can access if the limb or area of the body got fluid by color or how firm it is. If the limb didn't get fluid, which most commonly is a leg if not both due to femoral arteries be the first to get sclerotic, you have to raise the artery for that limb and inject fluid that way. So if a leg doesn't get fluid, we use the femoral artery to inject fluid and attain distribution that way. This can happen with arms, in which case you use the auxillary artery on the inside of the bicep, or the left common carotid artery if the left side of the face does not gain enough fluid. Anus and vagina are only covered when leakage occurs, which isn't with every dead person thankfully, with cotton or an A/V enclosure, which bluntly is a plastic buttplug type device that seals the hole as well. Autopsy and organ donation embalmings are performed very differently from a normal embalming and can take more time, especially an organ donor due to the procurement of long bone donation from the legs and arms. I can go into those when I have more time someday if wanted :)

I'd pretty much bet the scarf conceals ligature marks from hanging.
