Re: Various Different Women Shown in Their Casket

In some of the photos, it looks like there is a lot of make up around her temple and down her jaw line. Her nose looks like it has a lot of make up around it, too. The right upper lip area looks like it's a little crooked. There also looks to be some speckling on her right cheek towards her nose and top upper lip.

My first thought wasn't that there was any mistakes by the embalmer, but that she had some type of traumatic injury and had to be put back together or re-created, if you will.

I think the funeral home did a good job on her. I have definitely seen worse make up jobs.

If she had facial reconstruction the funeral home didn't do a good job, it did a great job. Stargazing and swollen lips are minor issues to begin with, but reconstruction is very difficult to do properly.

Honestly, if you question the artist, it wasn't that great.

Think of all the dead pictures (or, as in my case, all the real life dead people you've worked with) you've come across or even the viewings you have gone to. How do you know any of them did not suffer some type of traumatic head injury? I'm sure you've seen many a picture of someone who had to be reconstructed, but you didn't know it (I want to place a disclaimer because when I use "you" I'm referring to general "you.") because the artist was that great.

Some artists are better than others, but I wouldn't say "reconstruction is very difficult to do properly." I could agree that some artists never even become good at it, but I think most become great. Great to the point the general public has no idea what injuries the dead suffered.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with the position of her head or the size of her lips.

Also, I'm not commenting to pick on you or discredit your own opinion. As you can see, I've been around for several years, but I rarely post. I could be considered a newbie as well.

The only reason I posted in this thread was because of the make up discussion and the observations I made with the speckling, large amount of make up around temple area and down jawline, the nose, and upper lip. I meant to add, in my first post, I thought it could have been a gunshot wound. If I didn't notice the speckling, I would have guess any other type of traumatic injury.

Then again, the speckling could actually be freckles, she just has a ton of make up on, and I'm full of shit.

I agree with you. My brother is a master at building faces. Last I saw he recreated half of a woman's face including her entire nose and it looked amazing. And my dad avoid all the cosmetic stuff because he is not as good. I don't think experienced embalmers have difficult time doing facial reconstruction "properly" because they just go by the rule of thumb. Where some other embalmers have their own special technique. Some just have better skills than other. It's art, you're either good at it or you're not. It's a skill.. like golf.

I've seen a few photos of people in their caskets who died from car accidents and gunshot wounds, and they always have a bit of asymmetry to them.

Are you saying that if there was a reconstruction and it was great, you wouldn't even be able to tell? There wouldn't be an asymmetry or the mouth looking kind of off as if the deceased had a stroke?

Re: Various Different Women Shown in Their Casket

Maybe it's just where I'm from but the only time I heard the word "stargazing" was when I was ordering a bouquet for a family.
Are you from the US by any chance, Anubis? I'm just curious because some of the stuff you say is different from my personal experience. Just wondering if they do things differently where you're from like using putty as lip filler.

It's a really important and sensitive art too. There isn't much room for error when you are working on the deceased and have only one chance to make them look as they did when alive.

Everyone I've heard who works in the field says that it is very rewarding when you get things done right too. It's rare someone can so immediately see the benefits of their work.

I get most of my information on embalming from American sources and a morticians assistant I know who practices in the United States. I've read about putty being used as lip filler on some occasions.

Since you seems to be genuinely interested in embalming, may I suggest attending mortuary school instead of getting random "facts" off the internet? I don't know where you are but here in the US it's a 2 years associate degree.

I think it's incredible what work can be accomplished on some people. It truly is amazing and most times, the general public (even family) have no clue what type of reconstruction has taken place.

I know some people that will look to see if they can find the injuries. I admit, I look without gawking because I'm interested in the artistry (okay, I've got a morbid side to me too).

I've seen a kid that was mauled to death by dogs. Half his face was gone. I remember seeing part of a nare and his top lip was hanging off.

You would have never guessed it at the viewing. He looked perfect.
