It's the kind of thing young teenagers do when they are just goofing around. One of her girlfriends probably did it for her, when they were sitting in class, or at study hall.

She's in a half-coach casket with upper and lower lids. If she was presented from head to toe she would be in a full-coach, which doesn't have upper and lower lids. If you look at where the casket division is you can see that her jeans and feet wouldn't have been visible to mourners at her wake. You can also tell that she's in an inexpensive casket because the lower lid is crudely finished. For some reason the casket was fully open when these pictures were taken.

Also, she's a teenage girl, and it isn't uncommon for young people especially to be buried in comfortable casual clothes.

She's not a typical case though. Hangings can be rather complicated, and that's show she appears to have died.

She's not really dressed in winter clothes otherwise, so it stands out. Scarves are a common way to conceal hanging marks.
