This is not absolutely correct!:
"Hatte gelebt" in this sentence probably means that the child died after the procedure (but was alive at the beginning).
"Did survive" would have been: "Hat überlebt".

This is a picture from unit 731. They would regularly impregnate prisoners aka logs and then perform vivisection on them. That mother and her baby were both killed. Sorry to bring the bad news. The worse part is the baby probably belonged to the doctor that killed it and it's mother.
