Re: Autopsy Of A Polish Bantam
The gizzard is this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gizzard This poor little hen appeared to have died from vitamin K deficiency, an extremely bad infection in the reproductive area, infectious synovitis of the kidneys and a strain of salmonella |

Re: Autopsy Of A Polish Bantam
Damn best not let the other half see this as we have a few bantam chooks and the oldest is a Polish Bantam it's real cute with its Pom Pom head and is as friendly as you could ever imagine! It will sit on your arm or shoulder for as long as you can put up with it preening your hair and cooing in your ear! This summer we had a thunder and hail storm and the temperature plummeted the g/f ask her 12 yo to shut the chickens in as they had all gone into the house, but to check first.... About 30-40minutes later she hears the hen clucking and making a noise and finds the polish one out in the run pecking at the hen house door.... It was frozen and well we thought we might lose it. As some on here know I am bed bound a lot of the time due to a spinal injury and she brought it in asking what she should do, warm towels hot water bottles etc I just took it and as I was laying down I asked for a warm towel from airing cupboard and with that on top and my bare chest under it she lay there slowly coming around for a good 90mins then it layed there quite happy cluck clucking and gently preening the few hairs I have on my chest for a further 2 hours or more. She only remembered the thing when she came to bed and I mentioned the bloody thing! I know it's only a chicken but I will miss her when she goes .
