Re: Whiskey's Briefing Room IV
US missile decision triggers warnings of World War Three As was widely anticipated following Joe Biden's decision to allow the use of American-supplied missiles for strikes inside Russia, dire warnings invoking the spectre of a third world war have begun to emerge from both Moscow - and the US itself. Among the first to issue such warnings is Russian politician Maria Butina, an ally of Vladimir Putin. "These guys, Biden's administration, [are] trying to escalate the situation to the maximum while they still have power and are still in office," she told Reuters. "I have a great hope that [Donald] Trump will overcome this decision if this has been made because they are seriously risking the start of World War Three which is not in anybody's interest." Vladimir Dzhabarov, the first deputy head of the Russian upper house's international affairs committee, said Moscow's response would be immediate. "This is a very big step towards the start of world war three," he was quoted by the Tass state-owned news agency as saying. Similar language was also employed by the son of the US president-elect, Donald Trump Jr... I dunno about anyone else. But this truly scares the absolute shit out of me |

Poland signs deal with domestic companies to manufacture explosives The Polish government has signed a letter of intent with domestic companies to make powders necessary for producing ammunition, it has announced. Since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Poland has taken significant steps to bolster its defensive capabilities in the event of future conflict. "It is the first step towards rebuilding Polish ammunition production capabilities," defence minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said in a statement. Poland currently imports explosives from Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, France, Finland, Switzerland and Canada. The Polish government announced plans this month to invest 3 billion zlotys (£594m) to boost ammunition production. "No one who observes the war in Ukraine and other conflicts in the world today can have any doubts about how important it is to have access to a large amount of ammunition for modern weapons," Kosiniak-Kamysz added. |

Hungarian minister says US missile decision 'astonishingly dangerous' Against the backdrop of strong support for Ukraine among European leaders, Hungary has represented something of an exception since Russia's invasion. The country continues to buy Russian gas, with Prime Minister Viktor Orban making frequent statements sympathetic to Moscow and Vladimir Putin. Given this context, it should perhaps come as little surprise to see new comments from the nation's foreign minister, Peter Szijjarto, in response to the US allowing the use of its weapons to strike inside Russia. Describing the move as "astonishingly dangerous", he said: "The military mainstream has made a last, desperate attack on the new reality. "These forces do not even seem to be avoiding the worst: expanding the war in Ukraine to global proportions." |

Slovak leader hits out at US missile shift The Slovak prime minister has joined Hungary (see 14.40 post) in strongly opposing Washington's decision to allow Ukraine to use long-range US-supplied weapons in strikes against Russia Robert Fico said the move aimed to thwart or delay peace negotiations. "This is an unprecedented escalation of tensions, a decision that thwarts hopes for the start of any peace talks and an end to the mutual killing of Slavs in Ukraine," he said. Fico is another European leader who has fostered a stronger relationship with Vladimir Putin. His nationalist government immediately halted military supplies to Kyiv after taking office a year ago and has argued that weapons deliveries are prolonging the conflict. |

Re: Whiskey's Briefing Room IV
Greece and Israel in talks to develop €2 billion Iron Dome for Greece - As part of ongoing mil and energy accords between Israel, Greece and Cypress. Greece is negotiating with Israel to develop a 2 billion euro ($2.1 billion) anti-aircraft and missile defense similar to Israel's Iron Dome, according to Israeli and Greek officials. The talks, which were first reported by Reuters last week, come as multiple countries around the world have voiced interest in purchasing the Israeli missile defense system. Greece currently uses U.S. Patriot and old Russian S-300 systems to defend its airspace. The emerging defense deal with Israel is part of an ambitious 10-year Greek plan to modernize its military capabilities amid intermittent tensions with arch-rival Turkey, whose volatile leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly threatened Greece. Israel and Greece maintain strong bilateral ties, and the Hellenic Republic has become a popular tourist destination for Israelis who, over the last year, have virtually shunned neighboring Turkey over its leader’s growing and open support for Hamas and calls for boycotts on Israel. A separate major energy deal that would connect the power grids of Israel, Greece and Cyprus and include a possible future regional natural gas pipeline linking the eastern Mediterranean allies is expected to be sealed next year. The expected agreement comes amid burgeoning Israeli relations with both Cyprus and Greece, which have maintained support for Israel throughout the war, and close ties in a variety of fields including energy, defense, tourism, high-tech and cybersecurity. The long-awaited accord, which was stalled by the nearly 13-month-old war with Hamas in Gaza, will not include Turkey. |

Re: Whiskey's Briefing Room IV
(I posted this to the Israel conflict footage thread, but I am reposting to Whiskey's Briefing Room because it involves US mil action in the Red Sea, which has potential to escalate and branch into its own conflict.) US CENTCOM reportedly launched strikes on 15 Yemen targets. Here is one strike. It is reported that a US submarine operating in the Red Sea was involved in the attack. |

As an interesting twist on the Yemen Red Sea attacks, Houthis release this hit on the Corelia Moon, an India registered tanker claimed by Houthis to be a British flagged tanker. According to mideast shipping sources, the company of registration in India is a straw company and the tanker that was attacked is part of the "shadow fleet" that transports Russian oil in defiance of the global sanctions imposed on Moscow since the invasion of Ukraine. |

Re: Whiskey's Briefing Room IV
Poland has begun building a £1.9billion 'East Shield' along its borders with Russia and Belarus, in an effort to protect NATO's eastern flank as tensions simmer amid the war in Ukraine. The 400-mile-long construction will include anti-tank fortifications, bunkers and other obstacles built to physically defend the border and control movement at a time when US support for Europe's defence is expected to wane as Donald Trump takes office in January. Also i read those long range missiles may only be used in the Kursk region. |
